JOEL STEENHOEK
FOUNDER
As a sophomore at Prairie City Monroe High School, I discovered a passion for woodworking. Starting with a barrister's bookcase, advanced to more complex projects like a rolltop desk and entire kitchen sets for family. Seeking to further develop my skills, I got a part-time job at Custom Kitchen Designs in Newton, Iowa. Under the guidance of Larry Beard and his staff my woodworking skills were further developed by experiencing different techniques and processes. After high school, I pursued a business education at Des Moines Area Community College and successfully completed their entrepreneurship program. Following my graduation, I formed a partnership with Norm Swank, the owner of Swank's Custom Cabinets in Reasnor. During this collaboration, I honed my skills even further. Eventually, I decided to seize the opportunity to start my own business.
Steenhoek Wood Designs was established in December 2006 as the parent company for Custom Woodworks. Custom Woodworks served as the business name for the original shop located in Reasnor, Iowa. Business was great for many years at that location. However, in 2015, I decided to take my life a different direction. After volunteering for many years as a firefighter and EMT with Reasnor Fire and Rescue, I discovered a new found passion. This motivated me to temporarily put my woodworking business on hold and return to college to pursue a career as a Paramedic. Eventually, I successfully transitioned into this new profession and obtained my nationally registered paramedic certification.
I then applied and was offered a full-time position as a paramedic at Dallas County EMS in Adel, Iowa. Next I met my wife, with whom I now have two wonderful boys. However, even with my responsibilities to my family and primary job, I have decided to restart my business on the side. My work schedule is structured around 24-hour shifts, followed by 48 hours of time off. This schedule provides me with some flexibility to manage both my full-time career and my side venture with the right type of customer.
Attention to detail and providing exceptional service before, during, and after the sale are the core values that define my work ethic. An obsession with quality and craftsmanship is what sets me apart. When it comes to preparing bids, I meticulously analyze every detail to ensure that I can work within the specific budgets of each individual and their unique project. My ultimate aim is to achieve nothing less than total satisfaction for my clients. I value the opportunity to earn your business and sincerely appreciate the trust you place in me. Rest assured, I will go above and beyond to deliver the highest level of quality and service that you deserve.
